With holidays right around the corner, a good butter substitute is the urgent need of the hour! AF (Allergy Friendly) does not mean that our sugar cookies, cakes and breads should taste gross 🙂
So, here is a little secret from my kitchen to yours…psst – ‘Earth Balance’ range of products!
For over a year now I have been using Earth Balance soy-free spread. It is so yummy that the entire family has switched over from dairy-based spreads. This is great but cannot be used for cooking, sauteeing and baking. Of course, Earth Balance has a solution for that too. Little wonder – I love this company 🙂 The world’s first 100% Vegan butter sticks (shortening) are just awesome – http://www.earthbalancenatural.com/#/products/shortening/. Aesthetics is a huge part of product appeal for me! It is a pleasure to see individually wrapped vegan butter sticks – easy to measure out and store. Dont expect it to taste and feel like butter but it definitely cooks without lending any objectionable flavor to the dish.
And now, their latest additions to the world of vegan butter and spreads…Organic Coconut Spread and Vegan Mayo!
The coconut spread is naturally, dairy-free and soy-free. However, if you are not a huge fan of coconut flavor, you may not like this a whole lot. But, I would still recommend a try. After all – it was one of the products that won the 2011 VegNews awards 🙂
However, the Vegan Mayo is an awesome product in terms of taste, texture and flavor. In fact, it is hard to tell the difference and so worth a try.
Earth Balance products are available in major grocery stores like Wegman’s, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and health food stores. To find a location nearest you:

Happy Holiday Cooking 🙂
I love love love Earth Balance. My personal favorite is the Earth Balance shortening (sticks). I use them with … everything!
Me too Colette! I even cold-packed it for my little when traveling abroad :))
We love Earth Balance Soy-Free as well. We’ve had great luck cooking with it too!
Absolutely Jennifer. It is one the truly good products out there. The only downside I have found about the spread is – it melts faster than most other spreads so one has to be careful about storage conditions.
I am a huge fan of Earth Balance Vegan Sticks! I managed to get our local grocery store to stock it and now I can find it in most health and grocery stores. Word spread fast! I feel better using it in my baking than the basic shortening products that are out there. Susan H. @ the food allergy chronicles
I have used Crisco in the past but somehow feel uncomfortable with the health aspect of it. Earth Balance seems to be a better alternative.
We can’t get the Earth Balance sticks around here, so I just use the soy-free Earth Balance for all baking, cooking, grilled “cheese”, etc. My formerly diary-filled family can’t tell a difference. 🙂
Thanks for visiting Allergy Foodie, Heather 🙂
That is really good to know that the spread works well even in baking. AM gonna try it soon!
Best wishes,
